To be honest, I think it does look bad. Whenever I see a link, it's the first thing I look at. If it's a front end dev, I immediately check the source code quickly just to grasp some insights.

In my opinion, a simple page like this one gives A LOT more credibility than a template. Why? Great content, simple structure, an about page that does the job. I'm sure you can come up with a personal site that you code and that looks and feels simple & professional (possibly even better than that one).
