Far too few are willing to go against the grain. To possibly be the outcast because their views are different.
I remember hearing an interview with the frontman for one of those Christian Rock bands. What he said really struck a chord with me. I hope I can paraphrase this accurately.
In High School all those kids with their piercings, tattoos and outrageous hair, often of unusual color (purple, pink or blue) are seen as the freaks, but those Christian kids know who the real freaks are. They’re the ones treated as outcasts; the ones who are ostracized, ridiculed and put down at every turn.
Unfortunately, even you can say what you’ve just said and get away with it. As a white man I don’t have that luxury. Or should I say “privilege”. After all aren’t I and my privilege the problem? Of course that’s never actually stopped me from stating my opinion. But it does hurt me in my interpersonal relationship with my progressive girlfriend.
This is the price that must be paid if our country is to be made at all whole and our freedom to be is to be reenacted in good faith.
