Great article. This was more or less my approach, though I am over 60.

I stopped drinking and stopped eating sweets — candy, pie, cake, muffins, etc. reduced other carbs significantly but did not eliminate them. For me it’s easier to eliminate things than to “cut back.” Cutting back usually means I’ll find myself back to square one within a couple of months. Last year I had a beer on my birthday and 2 slices of pumpkin pie over the holidays. That was enough!

I started an exercise program about two years ago, at first just working out on the machines but at the beginning of this year I started doing High Intensity Interval Training mixed with resistance in a small group class.

The results have been spectacular. Since 2016 I’ve lost 55 pounds — I now weigh 180 but I’m also in the best shape I’ve been in since my ‘20s. Best of all is that it’s sustainable. I enjoy going to the gym, there are still plenty of things I enjoy eating and I feel great.

It’s definitely doable!
