Despite the security concerns about cloud connectivity, studies have shown that its adoption in workplaces is rapidly increasing. According to a study carried out by a company called RightScale, almost every business is using some kind of infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) application. The study also points out that more corporations are willing to introduce a large variety of cloud applications in their businesses.

Just like businesses have had to cope with the introduction of the internet, cloud application presents another shift in business evolution. Telecoms deploying cutting edge solutions such as Horizon Communications have risen to the occasion to offer secure cloud connectivity solutions to startups in countries throughout its target markets.

What are the reasons for this transition?

Cloud computing is preferred over other computing models which depend on licensed software mostly due to the on-demand access. While more and more businesses are embracing this technology, the ones already using it are demanding higher levels of security, efficiency, and integration. Cloud connectivity in the workplace has increased due to the following reasons:-

1. Its versatility

A cloud connection with strong inbuilt features allows personnel to access data from wherever they are. This has led to increased convenience for managers and analysts who need the data for decision making purposes. Managers can now get real-time data before meetings, while sales teams can upload and update data on the go. Cloud computation has also led to the greater control on data access as users are monitored from a centralized location.

2. Data sharing

Users can now access data, reports, and business trends through the cloud. Businesses with multiple clients can now easily create customer specific dashboards. Creation of virtual teams is now possible with team members working remotely from different locations.

3. Cloud computing solutions are customizable

Most cloud connection providers offer a low-risk and low-cost solution to enable companies make the transition. Once the solution is up and running, the company can customize it to its specific requirements. The companies’ IT department can come up with applications that suit their processes without involving the cloud provider.

4. It is cost effective

Companies no longer need to invest in expensive IT infrastructure. The switch of capital expenditures from expensive hardware to cloud subscriptions has made cloud connection a welcome solution. A company can save the costs associated with maintaining the infrastructure, the power used in running it, and floor space.

5. Data security

One of the largest threats to data security is the loss of employee devices such as personal computers. Cloud connectivity enables the storage of data in a central location. Data on a stolen device can easily be wiped off remotely.

Cloud connectivity, though it is still in its infancy cannot be ignored in a rapidly evolving digital age. Though most of its rules and best practices are still yet to be established, trying to ward this off as a passing trend is synonymous to a company investing in typewrites instead of computers.

Any company willing to make the transition should evaluate the risk and potential benefits of specific cloud solutions. Information security is a prime concern, and any transitioning company should evaluate potential threats and ascertain that the cloud provider can provide protection from them.
