I have always had these sudden surges to write something and these surges were the initial reason I wanted to get a blog started on my website a few years back. But these are mostly only temporary boosts in my motivation for writing, they pass after I have written a post or two.
I am the kind of person who has problems to committing to things in the long run and one those things being keeping an updated blog. I used to host my personal blog on my own website and if you scrolled through the content I had on there you would see that all the posts are about a couple of months apart. Long story short I sucked at blogging and still do.
So after constantly failing at blogging I eventually gave up and forgot about it for a while right up until recently. The recent uprising of all the great publishing platforms such as Medium and Svbtle made me reconsider writing. Now the potential audience was bigger, the experience of writing on these platforms was quite satisfying but most importantly now that a couple of years had passed and I had gained more experience in what I do, I actually had some things to say, whereas before my posts were usually just rants or glorified editorials.
I got myself on Medium and Svbtle and started writing. Needless to say I went back to my old habits and started getting lazy after a few articles.
I dismissed the idea of writing regularly once again. Fast forward a month or two again.
Now what I forgot to mention is that I have become a DN by Layervault addict, it is a great community with a lot of very insightful people and it has literally become the first web page I open up first thing in the morning as soon as I get on a computer. Since I visit it daily I started stumbling upon some great pieces of writing by designers, developers or just people who have something to say, be it just a DN post, a Medium article or a post on a personal blog. And I realized that I am jealous of these people only in a good way. I want to be able to just say what I have to say on a regular basis and not be a lazy bum.
It was obvious I had identified my problem, now it was time to find solutions to it. And guess where I went first for help? Yup! That’s right, I just turned to my friends over at DN with a simple question. And as expected I got some very useful feedback from the community.
Here is some of the amazing advice that I got:
>Make the effort to write 500 words a day, whether you publish them or not, and chances are you’ll blog on a regular basis before long. -John Locke
>If you don’t allow yourself to write terrible stuff every once in a while you’ll never get any good. -Daniel Fosco
>The more you flex that writing muscle, the easier it is to write. -Maurice Cherry
> As soon as you have an idea for an article, you’re best chance of actually capturing that thought is to write about it immediately. Whenever you feel like you’re in the mood to write, take advantage of the opportunity and crank out a handful of drafts. - Adrian Pelletier
So if you haven’t guessed yet my New Year’s resolution for 2014 is to “write”. I have already updated my to-do list with a daily reminder for me to write at least a couple of hundred words ( I am going with 500 to start with). I also discovered some great tools for the trade such as Editorially and Typewrite which I am hoping to be using frequently from now on.
I have already lined up a series of titles that I want to tackle and let’s hope this time around I actually manage to stick with the routine and be able to share all that I have to say these days.
Besides my main writing I have been also thinking of a different idea for a while which might actually come to life if all this writing experimentation succeeds. I am a massive food fan and if you have ever visited my Instagram profile you might realize that I am one of those people who takes a photo of everything they make or eat. As you might have guessed; a food blog is in the works, so stay tuned for that as well.
If you have any feedback for my writing and want to help me improve I am more than happy to hear you out.
You can find me writing on http://blog.artingraphics.net/ which runs on the Svbtle platform. I ramble on Medium once in a while as well.
