Where is Our Worship?

Our worship should be focused upon God.

My name is Jenny Mulvey. I am a Christian wife, future Christian educator, and someday hope to be a mother. I grew up in a Christian home, went to Christian school, cyber school, and public school. I also am the youngest of 6 children in my family. All of this should hopefully give you a bit of a look into my life and where I come from. Today I will be discussing the topic of sex and worship. In order to give you a little more information about me, I will share with you about how sex was portrayed to me. I never had ‘the talk’ with my parents. I learned most about the topic of sex from friends, social media, and simply from movies. My parents did their best to shelter me from the sexualized movies and TV shows that are out there, however I still was exposed to the way that society views sex. I did grow up understanding that it was something that was not to be done, as it was created by God to only be within the confines of marriage alone.

In Paul Tripp’s book, Sex and Money, he discusses the very difficult and controversial topics of sex and money. While often times the Church is silent when it comes to these topics, Tripp goes to extensive lengths to be a powerful voice amongst the silence. It is obvious through his writing that he is very passionate about these tough topics, and he seeks to bring light to the fact that our society has gone insane in these two major areas of life. Tripp provides some insight into how our society has become sex and money crazy, while also answering the question of how we can change that.

Tripp makes the following point in his book, “Since God is the creator and controller of all things, he alone is worthy of our worship” (Tripp 34). This point is very straight forward in its meaning. God is the creator and ultimate controller over all things. He created everything and is in control of all, having complete authority over all of his creation. Due to God being the ultimate authority he deserves our worship! Tripp discusses that the definition of worship is ascribing worth to something. This means that anything that we are ascribing worth to, we are worshipping. We are called to worship God in all things. This includes being worshipful in regards to sex and money, which is contrary to current belief of many in the world.

I found an article that discusses what we worship and it pulls from Psalm 115:1–8.

Psalm 115:8 says, “Those who make idols are just like them, as are all who trust in them.” The author goes on to discuss that we worship our technology, seeking ways to fulfill our craving for thrill and excitement online. This is very true about our society these days though, we are always seeking ways to find pleasure, excitement, and thrill, and if we are not doing that then we are bored and feel empty. I believe that this relates to the idea that our society is crazed about sex, as we are making sex solely about pleasure, while it should be done out of an act of worship and obedience to God, within the confines of marriage.

This idea that we are worshiping technology, sex, money, and so much more in our daily lives truly is scary to think about, especially as one day I will be an educator and a mother. I will have the responsibility to raise children up in the right away, as we are called to do as mothers and teachers according to the Word of God. Seeing how our society is teaching and exposing our children today makes me wary when thinking forward to raising up children in Christ. We are called to raise our children in God, sending them off in the way they should go as said in Proverbs 22:6. In Deuteronomy 6:6–9, we are commanded to teach our children to follow God’s commands, which includes worshiping him in all things. While it is a bit intimidating looking forward to the task at hand in my future, I am excited to change the way that the children in my class and even my own children will view worship as they grow. I pray that the Lord will work through me as I strive to focus my worship in everything upon Him, as we are called to solely called to worship Him.
