Rambling Thoughts on the Sans Multiverse

Undertale and the Sans multiverse is really fascinating to me. Somebody, one day, came up with Underfell, an au where everybody’s personalities are reversed, and it got so massively popular that it gave rise to more aus, some of which actually hella creative. And since people were already thirsting for Sans a lot, they pulled a Onceler and started shipping him with himself from these other aus. It got so freaking elaborate and complicated, with “official” pairs and lovechildren, freaking family trees, official crossovers and spin-offs and secondary aus inspired by the first aus.

And it’s fascinating because what basically happened is that a subset of Undertale fans got so numerous and popular that they created a story and fandom of their own, almost completely independent from the source material.

I think about the creator of Underfell sometimes. Did they know — would they have ever guessed — what was going to happen when they drew their little au and shared it with tumblr? Did they have the slightest clue how they would change Undertale forever? Did they have any hunch, any premonition regarding everything that would transpire?

I have the same questions for the person thirsting after the Onceler who first had the idea to ship the Onceler with himself. Do you know what you have brought onto the world? Do you see the blood on your hands? Do you wilfully ignore it for your own sanity? Do you not care at all and continue to selfishly indulge yourself with the debauchery of another new fandom?
