From Size 8 to Size 14 to Size 8

Born with a slender frame and a thin figure, I was blessed with a body I did not have to worry about much. Anyway unlike many such lucky people, I did not take this gift for granted and always tried to look after it as much as I could. I was always a health junkie, little did I know that my quest for good food and nutrition will help me when I put on weight when most women in our country do. I hit 30 and got pregnant and gained 20 kilos. I was not supposed to but I did (forced bed rest). And I did not lose most of it on the delivery table again like I was supposed to. That’s when I realised that I am now supposed to put all my knowledge as a nutrition consultant to use on myself.. So I consulted myself.

Nope, calorie deficit diet is not a solution especially after we have delivered, nobody wants to go through the postpartum depression, or the postpartum hair loss. I did not want my thyroid levels to go bonkers and also wanted to have high energy levels to carry my baby around just like my husband did. Thank God, I knew better and so I just reminded myself regarding few basic principles of healthy eating and disciplined myself. Yes yes, I’ll share those with you but fortunately or unfortunately most of us know them but still are unable to apply them in practical life.. Let me remind you of those just like I did to myself and we’ll get to the application part later.

  1. “oh my God you don’t know how many calories you are consuming” said a friend. Nah, I did not know still don’t know. I let the stomach do the talking, I just listen. Let your body or appetite decide how much you eat and not the diet chart off the Internet.
  2. Yeah yeah ghee is a super food, but does it help you loose weight. Yes it does, all good fats do and by good fats I mean your nuts and seeds and your mustard oil too. So please no boiled veggies for dinner.
  3. Activity, seriously, I can’t stress on this point enough. This is where most of us lack and new mommies who don’t have nannies at their disposal get lucky.
  4. Protein protein protein… Its surprising I still hear people talk about protein like it’s magic food. For those of you who don’t, awesome and for those of you who do, well all I can say is now you are in for a surprise.
  5. Daliya over instant oats, I like to think of it in such a way, each time you open a packet for a meal you lose an opportunity to fit into your old jeans.
  6. Love and support, sounds too clichéd right. Ok Ok I am a nutritionist so I’ll stick to that. So yes love the food you eat and support your body even when it’s flabby from places. Fat loss is a game of patience so be gentle.

I could go on but I’ve been told long blogs bore people and then this is just the beginning. Don’t worry, I’ll elaborate on each of the above and I have lots of more tips and tricks up my sleeve I eagerly want to share.

Stay in touch!!
