Wherever you drive on the South Island – Canterbury, Otago, Southland or the West Coast – it is beautiful. Stunningly beautiful!

We stopped every 2 km, took ourselves out, took the little one out of his car seat, took the big camera out, flicked the iPhone camera on, knelt down took pictures, stood up took pictures, posed against breathtaking mountains, lakes and the cleanest (and very shy) sheep I have ever seen.

As a pseudo-petrol head I couldn’t wait to get back in the car and drive.

I have listed the best roads I enjoyed driving, on South Island.

You may observe, curvy roads with “I-should-stop-and-capture-this-view-but-I-can’t-stop-I-want-to-savour-the-handling” roads get better ratings than plain straight good roads.
