What is A Complex Personality?

You must have heard about introverts and extroverts, and how they differ from each other. Even though these basic behavioral traits are wrongly taken as personality types, they give a good insight into what a person’s preference might be while reacting to actions from outside world. When we go one step further, we find what people call alpha or beta or gamma personalities -which are again presets of personalities and not personality types themselves- can mostly be taken as strong predilections of a person while interacting with the world around him.

These overly complicated words and overly-hyped personality theories simply suggest that it is more probable for a person to behave in a certain way in the presence of some known or unknown elements. These theories exist for a reason and for many people they are equally applicable. However, these theories do not apply to what we call complex personalities.

Let’s be clear here. At the end of the day, every person and his psyche is complex. When we say someone is a complex personality, it just means that he is more complicated than other personality types. If you observe closely, simple personality types behave in a manner which is more external than internal. This means their reaction to a certain stimulus depends on their environment and the people around them. They are ‘dependent’ in terms of not only their interactions but also their thought process. If their environment is positive, they behave positively and if it is negative they behave negatively.

People with a complex mindset are the exact opposite in that they internalize their every decision due to which many introvert traits are attached to them. The hot reading methods utilized by mentalists and common body language tells, do not work on the complex ones. This is partly because of their knowledge of these concepts and hence the unconscious masking of their body language, and partly because they might be consciously trying to fool you by altering the same. The thought process and body language of complex personalities go several layers deep and hence might be a double bluff or even a triple bluff.

If you’re looking for a simple definition, a complex personality is the one who forms his own opinions, questions everything, is naturally curious, and is not dependent on external constructs to decide how he/she will react in a particular social setting. They are confident in themselves -even if it is overconfidence- and they are continually trying to better themselves in every sphere of life, which results in an internal conflict governing their minds at all times. Consequently they are more creative, intelligent, and depressed than their counterparts.
