Education Struggles for People of Color
People of color have always struggled to get a fair and equal education. As a person of color I know what it feels like to be thought of as less or just not smart enough. My friends and family were all on the same boat as me. Some had it worse than others. They didn't get the same opportunities as the white people, they were looked down upon for being immigrants and they kept being told that they wont get anywhere in life. They deprived them from a good education just because they felt they were superior than them. I was lucky enough to not have gone through all of that but the pressure of being better than everyone else was always there because I feared to fail and of not being able to correct those stereotypes put on me. But I am only one story out of millions of people of color struggling with getting a good education. There is a lot more to this problem that needs to be brought up to peoples attention in order for the problem to be solved.
There is a lot of difficulties and setbacks that people of color go through when it comes to education. These people have disadvantages in and out of classrooms that limits them to further their education. There are limited resources given to them that they could use to change or improve their situation. I see that this topic is currently controversial with what is going on today. Education is one of the most important things that anyone can receive. It is a privilege to be able to be educated but not all people are given the same opportunities because they are not seen as equal.
Many people can relate to this topic because they have been victims of discrimination in the education system. Others who have not been through this discrimination may still be interested in this topic because the problems that are currently outgoing are too obvious to ignore.
There are many different situations in which people of color are not only struggling to get fair education but in where they are being stripped off programs that once helped them. For example DACA began in 2012 under Obama’s administration. This program was made to help immigrants, most people of color, to be able to further their education without being deported or be limited in resources. Basically it gave DACA recipients an equal opportunity as other students. Now Trump has decided to defund DACA therefore limiting these people to what they can do and possibly be deported. This is only one situation in where people of color are being discriminated.
Public schools are supposed to be open to everyone that wants an education. Some neighborhoods have schools that don’t offer programs that could benefit the students of color to help them in their current situation, much less help them further their education. These programs should be distributed nationwide but due to low funding from the government, and many more reasons, they lack simple resources. These students are not able change schools or pay for a better education because of the location they are at, or because their families cant afford it. These reasons should not be what stops students of color to continue to study because they are part of our future but all that is happening is that many are being discouraged. These great minds are supposed help change and improve this world but instead they are being restricted.
The struggle that people of color go through when it comes to education is what I am going to focus on this semester. There is so much I could go on when it comes to giving the fault to the government but I do know that there are two sides to this problem. I am willing to hear the other side, I’m not saying I will agree at all because what they might have to say will be ignorant, but I will read into every aspect of this topic so I am not being biased throughout my papers. There is so much research to be done from articles, interviews from politicians, teachers, and even students themselves that have struggled to receive a fair education. I’m confident that I will be able to cover most possible topics when it comes to education and people of color and that I will include both facts and personal statements from people that struggled or are currently struggling with wanting a good education in this country. Its disappointing to see that people of color getting a good education isn’t one of this country's priorities. My goal is to see the “reasoning” behind this problem and be able to educate others as well so we can all find a solution together.
