Like a Thief in the Night: On Marcos’ Hero’s Burial

ASAP-Katipunan vehemently condemns the surprise burial of late dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB) today, November 18. Like a thief in the night, his remains were sneaked in the LNMB.

In coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Marcos family must be cited with contempt for they concealed the information of burying him out of the guilt over Marcos’ crimes against humanity and out of the fear of the growing protests of the Filipino people.

With or without his knowledge, Duterte and his administration committed an unpardonable transgression to the Filipino people by allowing this to ensue. Instead of national healing, this event not only opened, but also further deepened the wounds caused by the Marcos’ dictatorship.

Despite this, this is neither the time for us to mourn alone nor consider this a defeat. Rather, this moment only reinforced the significance of the people’s struggle during Martial Law today and the need for us to continue the struggle to keep the memories of our dark days alive for the learning of the next generations and their criticism of our generation’s legacy of irony. At the same time, we the citizens must become more vigilant as Duterte has already expressed the idea of suspending the writ of habeas corpus and the possible declaration of Martial Law as allegedly part of his War on Drugs — these are all initial steps towards authoritarianism, which the Filipino people can and should never allow.
