They said the houndstooth print made a comeback this year, but did it ever really leave? The black and white broken checkered pattern is a classic print seen and worn throughout history. This print is timeless and embodies elegance which is one of the reasons why it’s a favorite pattern of mine to wear. Whether it’s a coat, pants, or a dress, the houndstooth pattern tells a story about the women wearing it. History of the Houndstooth Print
The name “houndstooth” is coined after it’s resemblance to a dog’s tooth. According to The Connector, “…houndstooth originated in wool cloth from the Scottish lowlands dating back to the 19th century.” Initially, this print was popular amongst men. In the 19th century, shepherd’s often owned houndstooth printed wool jackets.
In 1948, when Christian Dior added a fashion forward flare to the print in his Haute Couture spring/summer collection; The print then became a wealth status symbol for the upper class and women made houndstooth a staple pattern to have in their closets. Princess Diana sported several houndstooth looks throughout her lifetime.
Over the years, we’ve seen a revival of the print in many different colors other than the usual black and white. I personally own a mocha and autumn orange houndstooth blazer by Christian Dior that my mom thrifted in the late 90s. Another variation of the houndstooth print is the classic black and baby pink color that adds femininity and style to any look.
How To Wear Houndstooth
In December 2021, Beyonce released an Adidas X IVY Park collection called Halls of Ivy featuring the houndstooth pattern which sparked a resurgence of the many ways you can wear the print. From a sequin houndstooth jacket to patterned leggings and a sports bra, the collection featured fun ways to rock the classic pattern. The beauty about this pattern is no matter how you style it, it will always exude luxury.
One of my favorite staple pieces in my closet are a pair of high waisted houndstooth cropped pants that I purchased at Forever 21 in high school (thankfully they still fit like a glove). They elevate any look and add sophistication to my style.
