Break Up

“Go, Cubs, go! Go, Cubs, go. Hey Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today,” Alice and her friends sang as they drove home from Wrigley. They were all in a great mood! The Cubs had just won and all of the girls were ecstatic. All of a sudden Alice’s phone lit up.

She looked down at the text on her phone, “Hey, can I call u??” Alice became instantly nervous. It was 11:45 at night and her boyfriend wanted to call her. What was wrong? What happened? Did he have another fight with his parents?

“Katie, can you turn the music down? Joe’s going to call me, I think something’s wrong.” A few minutes later Alice’s phone began ringing. She quickly picked up.

“Hey, what’s going on?”

She could never have expected what he said next, “I need to get something off of my chest, I think we should breakup.”

Alice couldn’t think of anything else to say so she responded, “Ok.”

“Can we still be friends?”

“Ok.” Then he hung up the phone.

Her friend Molly asked, “What did he say?”

Alice could barely get the words out, “he broke up with me.”

“What?!” Her friends collectively yelled.

“I’m calling him back,” Molly said taking Alice’s phone from her hand. Molly put the phone to her ear and it rang and rang, but he didn’t answer.

“What a jerk! Are you ok?” Molly asked, handing the phone back to Alice.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. I’m ok.” Alice replied. However, she was silent for the rest of the car ride home as her friends continued to sing and celebrate.

Alice walked into her house in a state of disbelief and anger. She started heading for her room when her parents stopped her.

“How was the game?” Her mother asked, looking up from her book.

“The game was good, they won.” Alice trailed off. “Joe broke up with me tonight.”

“Oh sweetie, are you ok?”

“No, I’m mad! He broke up with me for no reason, over the phone when he knew I was at a Cubs game with my friends! I really want to text him and tell him off.”

“You should do what your feeling.” Her mother responded.

So Alice pulled out her phone and began typing Hey I just need to get something off of my chest. That was a dick move breaking up with me over the phone for no reason. Very cowardly. She read it outloud to her mother and then sent it. He responded minutes later and said I wanted to tell you before tomorrow and you were at soccer all day. His response made Alice livid. She furiously texted back Alright, whatever asshole. With that, Alice went to bed.
