History of Gangotri

Located in the left bank of Bhagirathi, The Gangotri temple was built in 18th century by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa. The magnificent temple is located amidst the stunning surroundings of deodars and pines.

Amidst the majestic Himalayas, the stunning locales of Gangotri pilgrimage, one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimages is located. According to the legend, King Bhagiratha did severe penance to make his predecessors free from sins. Goddess Ganga transformed herself into river, as the stream of life and touched earth for the first time. To minimize the impact of her fall, Lord Shiva received Ganga in his locks. Bhagirathi is another name of Ganga.

How to Reach

The mythological source of holy river Ganga, where King Bhagirath worshipped Lord Shiva and Goddess Ganaga descended in the form of river on earth. In order to control the heavy fall of Ganga, Lord Shiva received her in his huge locks. Positioned at an altitude of 3048 mts in Himalayas of Uttarakhand, Gangotri is located in the northern part of Uttarkashi District which is close to Indo-Tibetan Border.

Dehradun, Uttarkashi and Rishikesh are located at a distance of 300 km, 105 km and 250 kms respectively.

By Air: Well connected by air, as Jolly Grant is the closest airport from Gangotri. The airport is 26 kms from Rishikesh.

By Road: Gangotri Dham is well connected by road to major cities such as Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and NCR region. It is also connected with Haridwar, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Kotdwar, Roorkee, Chamba, Tehri, Barkot, Hanuman Chatti and Janki Chatti.

By Rail: Railway station is in Rishikesh which is just 249 kms away and accessible via cab, bus etc.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Gangotri Dham is summers, as they are cool, whereas winters are severely cold. In the months of May and June, arrival of rain is common. During the start of summers, Gangotri Temple gates are opened, as the weather is immensely plasant and a maximum temperature of 25 degree Celcius.

You can visit the holy city of Gangotri from April to June and September to November.
