Color Guard (flag spinning)

I have been in guard for almost 5 years now. I started my junior year of high school (I am now a sophomore in college guard)because a friend of mine wanted me to try out with her. My friend was about to be a senior so she could not try out so I decided I’d stay anyways and see what happened. There were over twenty different girls there to try out and only 5 were being picked. I knew I did not have a chance against twenty girls so I did not get my hopes up. I went in there and I tried my best to learn as fast as I could and I made it!

Starting off was the hardest thing I have ever done in my entire life! My captain made me feel like an ant that she stepped on every single day. I stuck to it though and I tried my best to be good; I was one of the worst ones on the guard my first year. The best thing about that year was making second place color guard at state! All of our hard work finally paid off.

There are many reasons why I love Color Guard and here are my top 5 reasons:

  • 1. The rush

When I step onto that field I feel like I am on top of the world. I have yet to find something that gave me as big of a rush as guard does. It has dulled down some through out the years but when the crowd goes wild I cannot feel my body because of the amazing rush I have.

  • 2. Discipline

This sounds more like something you learn but I love the discipline that I have learned from color guard because now I know when I really want something I can work hard to get it. Like I always say, “practice doesn’t make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect”.

  • 3. The bonds

I would not be friends with the people I am friends with if it were not for color guard. All of my friends are guard members and I would not have it any other way!

  • 4. The possibilities

You could end up in an amazing color guard when you get to college. Like I said, I am in college guard and I love it! I have been changed so much since I got to college when it comes to guard.

  • 5. The life long memories

Yes, all of the above all add up to amazing life long memories that I will cherish forever and carry on to my daughter and hopefully help her make life long memories with color guard like I have. Color guard is truly an amazing SPORT and I’m so grateful I joined it!

Never give up on your dreams!
