3 Myths About Hiring a Live Band for Your Wedding

“Bundle up, or you’ll catch a cold.”

How many times did you hear that from your elders growing up? I know I did. And I really believed it until I learned the truth about what really causes a cold…

It turns out that the average cold is caused by touching or breathing in rhinoviruses, which are invisible particles that cause the immune system to react, leading to a sore throat, headache, stuffy nose, etc.

But when it comes to “bundling up” to prevent a cold… it’s nothing more that an old wives tale.

And the same can be said for the myths about hiring a live band for your wedding reception…

Let’s talk about 3 common myths when it comes to hiring a live band for your wedding:

  1. The Cheesy Factor of Wedding Bands
  2. Live Bands Don’t Play Enough Variety
  3. Live Bands are Too Loud

1. Let’s start with the “Cheesy Factor”

We’ve all bared witness to a cheesy wedding band. The band is dressed in outfits that were hip in the 1940’s, and a 60 year old lead singer busts out his version of the Black Eyed Peas. The “Chicken Dance” is the opening song of the night, and the “Conga” seals their fate.

But this doesn’t mean you have to default to hiring a DJ. After all, we’ve all seen a mass of cheesy DJs, too.

These days, the best live bands that are on the cutting edge. They will have professional video, pictures, and audio on their website so you know what you’re getting into ahead of time. They will play a wide variety of musical styles; from the timeless classics that everyone loves, to today’s hottest top 40 dance hits.

Which brings us to the second myth…

2. Live bands don’t play enough variety

Are you worried that a live band will only play songs that were popular when your parents got married?

Of course you are! You want a live band that will have grandma tapping her toes while you and your friends go nuts on the dance floor.

It’s also helpful to pick a band that has both a male and female vocalist, offering more variety and keeping the feel of the original songs.

And hiring a band that knows how to mix their sound at room-appropriate volume levels like a pro is an absolute MUST.

Which takes us to the 3rd myth…

3. Live Bands are Too Loud

This is a big one. From audiences of 5 to 15,000, a live band can be too loud or too quiet. It depends on one simple factor… the sound technician (or lack thereof).

A truly professional band will have a professional sound engineer onsite to mix the levels of the live band throughout the evening — from the dinner music to the dance floor — there is a real science to having the perfect mix for your event.

(See my video blog about how to make sure my live band isn’t too loud.)

But what if the band sounds nothing like the original artist?

It’s all well and good when a live band puts their own spin on a song, but let’s face it, we want to keep the integrity of the original song so that it’s recognizable and easy to sing along to.

That’s why its really important to do your due diligence upfront. Go out and see them perform live, or request audio / video samples to make sure you dig their style.

To sum it all up…

The internet is your friend. Use it to find reviews, watch video’s, and listen to audio samples before you hire a live band.

A good live band will read the crowd and keep your dance floor hopping — and make sure the band can cover a wide variety of musical styles from Motown favorites, classic rock anthems, country, and Top 40 dance hits.

And make sure you hire a band with a dedicated professional sound engineer to maintain the perfect “not-too-loud-not-too-quiet” sound mix throughout the evening.

So don’t be afraid to say yes to a live band… hold the cheese. ;-)

The nostalgia of talented live musicians can bring magic and energy to your special celebration, leaving your guests raving about your wedding for years to come.

So cut through the misconceptions about hiring a live band of your wedding and embrace the idea — it just might be the best decision you make for your wedding.
