Every roofing material out there has different strengths and weaknesses and cedar roofing is no exception. Cedar shakes and shingles have been a popular roofing material for centuries. If you’re considering a cedar roof, here are some things you’ll want to consider first.

Pros

Natural beauty. Because cedar is a natural material, there’s a beauty that comes with this roofing material that you just can’t capture any other way. Tile, metal, and synthetic roofing materials that simulate the look of cedar roofing come close, but can’t perfectly achieve the look. It’s ideal if you’re going for that rustic, charming look.

Durable. Cedar roofing typically lasts about ten years longer than asphalt shingles and they hold up better in stormy weather.

Energy efficient. Cedar roofing acts as a natural insulation which is twice as effective as asphalt shingles. They can save you on your heating and cooling costs throughout the year.

Eco-friendly. Cedar shingles are 100% biodegradable so they don’t end up in landfills for decades after they’re done serving as your roof.

Cons

Cost. Wood shakes are shingles are more difficult to install and are a costlier material to begin with so a cedar roof will cost you more money.

Maintenance. Pretty much any roofing material is going to require maintenance but cedar roofing is particularly susceptible to rot, moss, and insects so you’ll need to invest in some regular maintenance to avoid such problems.

Restrictions. Cedar roofing is treated with chemicals to make them resistant to fire but this fireproofing can wear off over time, as a result, some municipalities, especially in areas prone to wildfires, prohibit the use of cedar roofing on residences.
