How many times have you been camping? Before we left on this trip around the world, I had probably been camping less than 20 nights of my life. Less than 5 of those nights were wild camping. At first, wild camping made me REALLY freaking anxious. I’ve written this article to make grabbing your tent and setting up camp anywhere seem doable. At the time of writing, we’ve camped over 100 nights. We can break down our campsites into three categories :
- A good campsite is safe enough to pass the night without having your things nicked or waking up to a flooded tent.
- A great campsite has the above and offers some comforts, like access to water, good protection from wind, rain, or bugs, and seclusion from passersby.
- An amazing campsite has all these things plus a great view or a place to take a swim.
You’ll have to accept that you can’t have amazing all the time, but you can almost always have good, even great. I’m going to walk you through our process of wild camping, from selecting a spot to leaving in the morning. If you’re a French speaker, you can also check out this guide by Les Others for extra tips.
