Infinite Memories Series: Part I — “I’ve Been Loving You So Long”

[Otis Redding- I’ve been loving you too long plays on the background.]*
He had a set of eyes so kind that it seemed alive on its own. The kind of eyes that smile and the kind that makes her heart beats — in a melody only he can make her compose — as butterflies consume her stomach. She followed the trace of his stare as he took a glance at her lips, slightly moving his gaze down to her neck, then continues to examine her look till he finds his way back to where his eyes would meet hers. It wasn’t lust but rather a deep appreciation — like how an artist would admire a masterpiece. He stretches his arms and embraced her by the waist towards him and rub the point of his nose on hers. As soon as their eyes met he unhesitantly kisses her and she felt the smile he implanted on her lips.
She was in love with him not because he could show her the world but rather, because he understood hers. He knew the love languages she possessed and was selflessly showering her with comforts of love. It was the every day small backrubs he gave her when she worked from home. It’s those weekend afternoons when he held her hand as they fall asleep next to each other after a hearty overpriced lunch at a hipster cafe and while a Netflix film is still playing at the edge of the bed….
“…And I can’t stop now
Please, please, please don’t make me stop now
Talkin’ ‘bout heart and soul
That I love you
I love you….”
[Music stops.]
She opened her eyes, alone, on her queen sized bed.
Everything always seemed better after the hurricane. His new chapter will soon start but at a place, halfway across the world from hers and all that’s left behind would be the memory of what was once something she thought that would last a lifetime. There’s no certainty if they would ever meet again, but she’s not sad, no, she couldn’t. Not after truly loving him so deeply through the struggle and pain, through the months of learning the art of compromise, through the day to day routine, and mostly through the simplest things.
“I love you, so much,” she said under her breath and in the depths of her heart, she swore she could hear him whisper those exact words back.
And for the rest of their lives, there will be an undeniable time that they’ll always belong to one another but only in precious memory.
