Fantastic article. It raised real issues I hadn’t even really considered previously.
On the subject of algorithms displaying ingrained social racism and other ills, it got me thinking about the ethics of adapting these to push back and fight against the wrongs we see. For instance using your example, would it be right for Google to specifically code against Black names getting served adverts for criminal checks any more than White, Brown or Asian names? And how would companies know when they have gone too far and end up inadvertently censoring information? I hope that more people discussing and becoming aware of these kinds of issues will in general move humanity to a more accepting and generous reasoning but even small amounts of this kind of change takes decades and centuries. For now, I will focus on making sure my children are aware and considerate and hope that influencing my small circle can help to create the big change.
