Oscar Nominee # 3: Hacksaw Ridge
War movies often evoke a mixed response. You either love them or you hate them. Done right, these movies elicit a superlative reaction. Even if they slip a bit, they are dissed.
‘Hacksaw Ridge' is everything a war movie should be like. The fact that it’s based on a true story, adds to its charm.
Imagine walking into the line of fire in a battlefield with no weapons and no intention to fight, but to help someone wounded. All this because you want to serve the country without giving up your beliefs. That’s exactly what Desmond Doss did during World War 2 and Mel Gibson has wonderfully brought his story to life on screen.
Mel Gibson’s films are known for their raw content and this film is no different. It shows the battlefield in all its rawness. It’s bloody, it’s gruesome and it’s terrifying. Make no mistake. This movie is not for everyone and certainly not for the faint-hearted. But if you have seen such war movies and can handle the gory content, you will appreciate this film as one of the best war movies ever made. The film gives you goosebumps at regular intervals.
For Andrew Garfield, this is a coming-of-age film and he has done a terrific job. All members of the supporting cast are very apt in their roles. A special mention to Hugo Weaving for his role as the drunkard Tom Doss.
When the movie ends, you feel that you have seen something special on the lines of ‘Saving Private Ryan’. It is bound to stay with you for a long time.
Note of warning: This film has a lot of blood, violence and gory content as seen in a battlefield. Not for the faint- hearted.
My rating: 8.5/10
