Jean Cocteau’s film Orpheus opposes the typical surrealist film that associates women with the unconscious. In this film, women are seen as powerful controllers of males who follow women blindly. This contrasts with the typical stereotype of male dominance over women. As a result of this, women are more significant in Cocteau’s surrealist works than they usually are in cinema.
