Life often presents us with situations that trigger immediate reactions within us. Reacting impulsively may lead to unhappiness, worsen relationships, and make matters worse overall.

Instead, we should aim to respond thoughtfully, considering the desired outcome.

This choice between reacting and responding arises frequently in various relationships, whether it’s a nagging parent, a rude coworker, or an inconsiderate spouse.

External events can bother us, but by learning to respond instead of reacting, we can improve situations rather than complicating them.

How to Cultivate the Ability to Respond

Pause.

Just paaauuuussse…. Long silent pause.

When something happens that might upset us or trigger an emotional response, pay close attention to our thoughts and urge to react.

Then, pause.

Take a moment to breathe. Inhale, exhale. Inhale, Exhale. Inhale Exhale.

Observe the urge to react irrationally…
