Exothermic Welding to make joints without any external heating provision
Every electrical equipment needs to be connected to ground for safe dissipation of electrical faults. This coordination with earth can be done using conventional methods using GI or Copper conductors along with salt and charcoal mixture deploying backfilling process. This conventional methodology is associated with numerous drawbacks, which includes rapid corrosion of conductors or washing away of salt and charcoal concoction. The conventional method has been modified to overcome these drawbacks. Traditionally, the connection making process was carried out using clamping, crimping, bolting, brazing, etc. which are methods that get degraded and disconnected on a faster rate.
The advance earthing technique rendering maintenance free service employs copper bonded steel rod and earth enhancement compound. But the connections are still made using conventional technique which creates highly pores and weak joints. This is well aware that earthing must be incorporated, but it must be properly installed. The installation must last longer and should be effective. Owing to the complex and sophisticated equipments and circuitries, proper earthing/ grounding is a mandate. The jointing section is an important part which is always ignored. For enabling continuity in the circuit, the conductors must be well connected. Exothermic welding technique is a reliable aid that can make smooth connection for two or more dissimilar conductors. This can be used for linking earthing and lightning protection system. Joints may differ based on the type of joint that is to be made and also the dimensions. This method is easy and quick to install. All you need is an exothermic welding kit that included — graphite mould, welding powder, flint gun, mould holding clamp and cleaning brushes.
The procedure to make a tight and secure joint is quite simple
The graphite mould is cleaned using brush so as to remove the dust and moisture from staying on the mould that can hamper the quality of the weld. After cleaning, the conductors to be joined are aligned inside the mould. Once you have properly aligned the conductors, mould is closed and weld powder is poured into it. Then, tightly hold the mould using holder. The flint gun is then used to initiate a spark which will then lead to a chemical reaction inside the mould. This high temperature chemical reaction will melt the weld power in the mould. The mould can be opened once the molten metal is cooled down.
