Profile on Priyanka Chopra

Not many actresses have a commendable position in Bollywood and Hollywood at the same time. Priyanka Chopra is one such actress who not only has a bright career in Bollywood but also a stable career in Hollywood. Her journey from a model to a Bollywood actress and then her venture into Hollywood was not an easy one. She had her own troubles but she overcame them all. Currently, she has completed filming for the movie Baywatch starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron and she is filming for Quantico season two.

As a daughter with army parents, Chopra had to move a lot during her childhood. She also left to pursue education in the U.S when she was 13 years old. Life wasn’t easy for her then as she mentioned in an interview with Complex, “I was bullied by a freshman named Jeanine. She was black, and supremely racist. Jeanine used to say, ‘Brownie, go back to your country, you smell of curry,’ or ‘Do you smell curry coming?’ You know when you’re a kid, and you’re made to feel bad about where your roots are, or what you look like? You don’t understand it, you just feel bad about who you are.” According to the same article, she returned to India defeated.

But she didn’t stop there. Her mom made her participate in beauty pageants and she won the Miss World title in 2000 which gave her the ticket to Bollywood. Thought her first few films were a hit, till 2008 her films continually flopped box office. Then the film Fashion changed her career for the better. Fashion was a women-centric movie with the Indian Fashion Industry as the backdrop. The film was a huge success and Priyanka Chopra won many accolades for her role as Meghna Mathur, a model from humble background who had to deal with the competition and darker side of the fashion industry.

After that her films were highly successful and at present she is one of the highest paid actresses in Bollywood. Her acting skills are widely recognised and she is one of the few actresses who can carry a movie all by herself without a male lead. Her roles are versatile and she doesn’t limit herself to playing good guy characters. She played the role of an antagonist in the thriller Aitraaz, an ambitious woman who falsely accuses her co-worker of sexual harassment. She also plays the antagonist in her upcoming movie Baywatch.

In addition to her success in Bollywood, Priyanka Chopra is the first Indian actress to headline an American series. Her series, Quantico is about a FBI agent Alex Parrish who is framed for a terrorist attack and must prove her innocence. The series received positive reviews and Priyanka Chopra won a People’s Choice Award for her role. Her success is very important in terms of diversity in Hollywood. Unlike most of the stereotypical Indian roles, her role Alex Parrish is well written defying stereotypes. She is bold, independent and strong. In an exclusive interview with Complex, about Quantico Chopra said, “It’s pop drama, yet it doesn’t take your intelligence for granted, and I love that. And Alex as a character is so my alter ego. She’s an amazing character: She’s cool and she totally has it together even when she’s unravelling. She’s badass and flawed, yet extremely confident. She’s an amazing character to play.”

Aside from acting, Chopra is very much interested in music. She has released three singles so far. She has worked with popular American artists like and Pitbull. She also participated in various soundtracks. According to her interview with Complex, she is putting her music career on hold because of her film engagements. She said, “I’ve been so caught with Quantico and my assignments in India I haven’t had the time to go back to the studio. I hope I get to go back and do it because I love making music, and it’s such an incredible high to work with such great people. I miss it. I want to be able to do that soon.”

Chopra is vocal as a feminist. She has spoken about various issues like female infanticide and equal pay. Her most memorable reply was when she was asked in an interview whether she wanted to be the Bond girl and she said that she would rather be the Bond instead. She also hates being called a sex symbol. In the interview with Complex, she said, “Why does anything need to be a symbol? Why must a woman, or a man, or anyone be put in a box like that? I have an aversion to stereotypes and just because a woman is beautiful or presents herself a certain way, she shouldn’t be a symbol of anything. I have a problem with the generalization and I feel it’s disrespectful.”

Chopra is known to be humble despite her stardom. She has her own definition of success. In the same interview with Complex she said, “People think that once you achieve success it’s great and you party, but it’s not. You’re known by your last failure. So you have to move from that to your next success. Success is a journey, you have to be consistently successful to be called successful.”

Priyanka Chopra seems to be the type to keep moving forward without any distractions despite the obstacles. As she said in the same interview, “I don’t know where I’ll win, but I know I want to keep moving, keep going. When I achieve something then I’m like, all right ‘What’s next?” Hopefully, she will be successful in her future endeavours too.
