“Can you guarantee that you’ll get me back to my kids?”

I was watching the movie Inception last night (for the second time since it came out five years ago). That movie is bloody good!

If you watched it, at the start there’s a scene where the businessman drops Leonardo DiCaprio off to his private plane, and they have a conversation. The guy offers Leonardo the job that he eventually takes, and then Leonardo in return asks him to arrange for his return back to the United States.

Leonardo says to him “I need you to promise me that i’ll be able to go back home to my kids. I need you to guarantee that.”

And then the guy says, “I can’t guarantee that, but I will. Either you can take a leap of faith, or you can just do nothing and guarantee that you’ll never see your kids again.”

I’m obviously paraphrasing, so the words aren’t exactly the same, but they’re pretty close.

My friend who was sitting beside me said, “for some odd reason, what that guy said was pretty reassuring.” And I agreed with him.

There was no reason for Leonardo to believe that guy, but he did. Because the fellow knew that he was telling the truth.

When you’re marketing to your prospects, if you believe in what you’re selling enough, you will unashamedly ask them to buy, because YOU KNOW that it’s the best thing for them. You feel an almost moral obligation to expose them to the information. When you don’t have that belief, you will be hesitant and people can tell.
