What Do We Mean By ‘Eliminating the Distance?’

At Asia P3 Hub, our philosophy is to jettison the distance between public, private and social sectors by cultivating and nurturing multi-sector partnerships in which we can learn, grow, leverage our mutual strengths and solve tough problems together. How? By carving out common ground, shared value and leveraging each other’s insights and resources to find new paths of discovery and solutions. We work to eliminate the distance between the work we do and the people we serve, intentionally seeking out their stories. We strive to eliminate the distance between our current generation and future generations by welcoming people of all ages to take an inside look into how we work. Our Newsletter this month shares examples and commentary on what it means and why it’s important to “Eliminate the Distance!”

UNDERCOVER STUDENT

In the Eyes of a High-Schooler: Asia P3 Hub

Sabine Galvez, a sophomore at the International School of Singapore (ISS), joined the Asia P3 Hub team for 3 days in May as a part of her high school programme called World of Work. Students are required to go to a workplace of their choice on the designated three days and do what tasks they can to get a first-hand experience of the working life. Her time observing Asia P3 Hub was not only a rewarding experience for her, but also one in which our team members obtained insight on how our future generation perceives the work we do. Truly eliminating the distance between the current generation and the future generation!

PATTERNS OF INNOVATION

Gutenberg Printing Press: How New Ideas Build on Old Ones

As Mark Twain puts it, “substantially all ideas are second-hand, consciously and unconsciously drawn from a million outside sources.” We draw from the knowledge and experiences of people around us, add our own insights to them, and form new innovations that either make the functions of old innovations more efficient or result in inventions that function completely differently from what it’s components were intended for. The story of the Gutenberg Printing Press demonstrates that the perception that new ideas are distanced and isolated from old ideas is misconceived: new ideas build on old ones.
