Families in the Philippines struggling to get drinking water, farmers in remote areas whose livelihoods have been affected by climate change, children dropping out of school to help provide for their families, communities being choked by waste — these are the challenge-owners at the heart of a Social Innovation Challenge (SIC) launched by World Vision Canada, in partnership with Asia P3 Hub, and World Vision Philippines.

Turn challenges into opportunities and co-create impactful solutions directly with these communities in the Philippines through the challenge platform. The winning solution team will receive both financial and operational support to pilot their solution in partnership with the communities.

The SIC was created to tap into existing talent and ideas being generated by innovators across the world, and to develop sustainable solutions that will solve global issues that are affecting four specific communities in the Philippines. The challenge-owners (communities) are part of the problem validation and solutioning process throughout the challenge, which takes a human-centred design approach.

The SIC is one of its kind because:

  • Grounds up, problem-led approach. Challenge statements are sourced directly from the field, with a detailed technical brief that provides in-depth context on the people experiencing the challenge. It is not the usual “solution looking for a problem” approach.
  • Leveraging on World Vision’s network. Access to communities, as well as the expertise of former World Vision sponsored children.
  • Design thinking integrated. Field staff were equipped with design thinking methodologies to elicit questions and to think like a solution creator when crafting the challenge statements.
  • Community co-creation. Shortlisted solutions will be refined, validated and co-created together with the community.
  • End implementation in mind. The SIC has an ambitious goal to bring the innovation from ideation to pilot.

Four communities, four challenges, looking for four innovative solutions. Take the challenge!

Water

Imagine having to work for water your whole life? In Sogod Province on Cebu Island, Philippines, residents struggle to get access to water. Despite careful budgeting of water for drinking, household and agricultural use, the cost of water is up to a quarter of their income for some households. Having access to safe water for drinking would improve their health, and save considerable time and money for the children and families living in Sogod.

The Challenge: How might we make potable water accessible to far-flung communities?

Take the Water challenge! Open to residents of the United States.

Out-of-School Youth

In Bucana, Davao City, despite parents best efforts to eke out a living and support their family, their low earnings mean that often children are forced to drop out of school to work and supplement the family income.

The Challenge: How might we build an enterprise model to support the educational needs of out-of-school youth?

Take the Out-of-school Youth challenge! Open to residents of the Philippines.

Waste

A steady stream of garbage flows down and washes up on the banks of the Iloilo River, much of it settling in communities of Santo Nino Sur and Santo Nino Norte. Despite the best efforts of a few families to clean up the waste, it is piled up everywhere. As well as the smell that permeates, flies fill the air, and rats, mosquitoes and cockroaches are a problem for the families living here.

The Challenge: How might we find value in waste?

Take the Waste challenge! Open to residents of Canada.

Agriculture

In Brgy. Cabalawan, Sogod, Northern Cebu, the weather has changed, erosion is leaching the soil and something is wrong with the fruits and vegetables. Local families are getting fewer harvests and are struggling to feed themselves.

The Challenge: How might we make the livelihood of upland farmers sustainable in the face of climate change effects on soil?

Take the Agriculture challenge! Open to residents of the Philippines.

Take the challenge. Co-create change.

Do you have an innovative solution to one of these challenges? Or know someone who might be able to co-create the right solution with these communities? Please share the challenge with your networks!

Deadline for submission for Water and Waste challenges is February 22, 2019. Agriculture and Out-of-School Youth challenges deadline is yet to be announced.
