The 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is underway in Australia. I decided to do an analysis of all venues of this event.

The offical venues are following.

  • Adelaide Oval
  • Bellerive Oval, Hobart
  • Kardinia Park, Geelong
  • Melbourne Cricket Ground
  • Perth Stadium
  • Sydney Cricket Ground
  • The Gabba, Brisbane

Dataset

The data is from cricsheet.org

A total of 49 T20I matches have been played in these venues, this data may not be enough, so I have also included all Big Bash League (BBL)Matches in the data set too to give us a good overview of each venue.

From BBL we get 290 games in these 7 ground, which gives us a total of 339 Games.

Count of T20 Games at each Ground

Let’s now have a look at some summary statistics for each ground separately.

Average Score Each Inning

Hobart has the highest Avg score in first inning, 168.59 and Geelong has the lowest Avg 2nd Inning score of 118.33.

Power Play

Power play is very important part of T20 games, let’s have a look at avg runs in power play.

Power play avg runs

Gabba Brisbane and Adelaide Oval have the highest Power play averages, Geelong has the lowest.

Chasing Vs Defending?

There’s a big debate in cricket world about chasing vs defending, generally in Asian ground Chasing preferred by all teams, toss winner is match winner. Dew in the ground effects the bowling performance in 2nd inning and so toss winners usually choose to field first and chase down the score . Let’s see the trend of winnings in these venues.

Win vs Inning

In Adelaide, Hobart, Geelong and Perth a higher percentage of games were won by those Batting first, whereas in MCG, SCG and Gabba More games are won by team batting second.

Melbourne Cricket Ground

Some of the most important games will be played at the MCG, lets look at some specific stats of this venue.

Avg Runs 1st Innings: 155.56
Avg Runs 2nd Innings: 140.97

Avg Wickets 2nd Innings PowerPlay: 1.51

Won Batting 1st: 40.28%
Won Batting 2nd: 56.94%

56% Games are won by Batting second, AVG boundaries are same in both innings, the games tend to be very close in this ground.

Adelaide Oval

Avg Runs 1st Innings: 165.69
Avg Runs 2nd Innings: 143.54

Avg Runs 1st Innings Power Play: 44.51
