Division of labour is a process of production in which a job is split up into a number of small parts. Each of the parts is given to an individual worker to complete it independently. To understand properly the meaning of the division of labour have a visit to a biscuit factory. There you will see a man does ready all ingredients , the second man making biscuits , the third man sees all the work, the forth man packing the biscuits and the fifth man delivered these biscuits to the shops.

TYPES OF DIVISION OF LABOUR:

Division of labour may be cleared into following main types.

  1. SIMPLE DIVISION OF LABOUR:

When the production process is split up into different parts and a number of workers complete it in such a way that the contribution made by each worker cannot be known, it is said simple division of labour . The work completed by a group of farmers, carpenters ,blacksmiths are example of simple division of labour.

2. COMPLEX DIVISION OF LABOUR:

When the production process is split up into different parts and each part is assigned to be completed by specialised skilful workers, it is called complex division of labour. For instance, in a shoes factory, one group of workers prepare upper portion, the second group prepare the soles, third group stitches the both parts and the forth group polishes them and so on. it is the kind of complex division of labour.

3. OCCUPATIONAL DIVISION OF LABOUR:

When the production of a certain good or an article is carried out by a person whose occupation is to make it, it is an occupational division of labour. The work done by a typist, a good smith, a weaver , a cobbler and a mason is the form of occupational division of labour.

4.TERRITORIAL OR GEOGRAPHICAL DIVISION OF LABOUR:

When due to some reason the production of specified goods is concentrated at a particular place or a country, it is called a territorial or geographical division of labour. for example “Sri Lanka is well known for production of tea and Bangladesh for production of jute”.
