Morbid Curiosity

Many people are fascinated with the world of true crime, but when does it become an issue? Morbid curiosity is a widespread characteristic because it is inherent to human nature and entails exploring things that are taboo or considered improper, even deviant.

Experts have proposed that morbid curiosity has a significant function — to assist individuals in comprehending and evading perilous circumstances in a secure environment. This mental inclination has manifested itself in widespread human conduct, such as the Roman gladiator battles, the incorporation of death in ceremonies and faith, and the enormous following of the true crime and horror genres.

Morbid curiosity throughout history. The Roman gladiatorial games, where people would gather to watch gladiators fight to the death. Public executions, which were once a common form of entertainment in many cultures.

  • The popularity of “freak shows” in the 19th and early 20th centuries, where people would pay to see individuals with physical abnormalities or deformities.
  • The fascination with death and the afterlife in many ancient cultures is evidenced by their elaborate burial rituals and beliefs about the afterlife.
  • The popularity of ghost stories and supernatural tales throughout history.

These are just a few examples of how morbid curiosity has played out in human behavior throughout history.

Chilling confession: Jung Yoo-Jung admitted to killing a tutor to “give murder a try.”

When True Crime Fascination Leads to Murder

A South Korean woman, aged 23 and fixated on true crime, has been charged with murder following her confession that she killed her tutor to satisfy her curiosity. Jung Yoo-Jung, the woman in question, contacted the victim, a university student and private tutor, via an online tutoring platform, posing as a parent seeking English lessons for her child.

Jung bought a school uniform to pose as a student when she visited the tutor’s home, where she is accused of stabbing the victim to death and dismembering her.

According to local reports, Jung Yoo-Jung used a taxi to transport and dispose of parts of the victim’s body, whom she is accused of killing and dismembering. The taxi driver grew suspicious of Jung and alerted the authorities. Police later discovered additional body parts in garbage bags at Jung’s residence.

After committing the murder, Jung Yoo-Jung is said to have dismembered the victim’s body, disposing of some parts in a suitcase in a wooded area near a river, while keeping others at her home. In an attempt to cover her tracks and commit the “perfect crime,” Jung retained the victim’s cell phone, ID card, and wallet. However, her plan was foiled when the taxi driver who transported her to the wooded area became suspicious and notified the authorities. Upon investigation, police discovered blood-stained clothing in her bags.

The victim, a woman in her 20s, was a university student and worked as a freelance tutor. She resided alone in Busan. Jung Yoo-Jung made contact with the victim through an online tutoring service, pretending to be a parent in search of an English tutor for her fictitious middle school-aged child. Tragically, the victim was killed on May 26th at her residence in Busan’s Geumjeong District.

My condolences and dearest respect go out to the victim’s family. I can not begin to imagine how they must feel.

Calculated crime: Jung met the victim through a tutoring app, posing as a parent seeking lessons.

Jung Yoo-Jung’s indictment for murder

Reports indicate that Jung Yoo-Jung had carefully planned the murder, driven by an obsession with murder from TV shows and books. She is said to have confessed to killing her tutor to satisfy her curiosity.

Jung Yoo-Jung was caught by authorities after a cab driver who drove her to a riverside area in Yangsan, northwest of Busan, past midnight reported her after she went into the bushes with a bloodstained suitcase. The taxi driver grew suspicious of Jung and alerted the police.

Jung is said to have led a reclusive life for five years, during which time she was never employed. It is suspected that her isolation and lack of social interaction may have played a role in the murder. Jung was apprehended on May 27th on charges of killing the victim and disposing of parts of her body. She was subsequently indicted for murder in Busan, South Korea, after reportedly confessing to committing the crime out of curiosity, as per local news sources.

Tragic end: The victim, a university student, and tutor, was killed at her home in Busan.
