Google DeepMind is a British AI company, Co-Founded by Demis Hassabis. With Deep Mind, Demis not only to pushes the boundaries of machine learning/AI but in hopes to get a better understanding of human brain. Demis quotes:

Attempting to instill intelligence in to an algorithmic construct may prove to be the best path to understanding some of the enuring mysteries of our mind.

Who controls AI will have the power

AphaGo was a significant achievement for AIs. AlphaGo was designed to beat a human player in a game of Go. Keep in mind that the game of go has more possible moves then atoms in the universe so it’s impossible to calculate every move. DE\Blog explains the golden age of AI. Previous AIs, like Deep Blue created by IBM would calculates it’s best possible moves with brute force where as AphaGo uses Neural Network and [Reinforcement Learning](a type of machine learning).

Neural Network

Neural Network is model of of the human brain. This idea has been around for for decades and is not possible because of advance and cheap GPUs.

Some other possibilities aside of Neural Network aside form AlphaGo is the ability to generate raw sounds such as speech and sound. Demos can be heard at WaveNet.

Neural Network is able to describe images in text form. Furthermore, StackGAN combines 2 Neural Networks to further improve it self.

Reinforced Learning

Reinforced Learning, instead of searching all the possible endings of a game the AI would instead evaluate the ending after a sequence of moves.

Deep Mind was created to learn from scratch without any for knowledge. Deep Mind would first play with a human player and mimic it’s moves then from this experience it would then go on playing it self for an exponential amount of times using Reinforcement Learning, thus improving it’s win rate over time. According to MIT the neural network should in theory mimic the human short term memory. Let’s see some examples.

Deep Q Network learning over time.

AI learning to walk:

Creative AI?

We know that computers are very good at computations but are not capable of creativity and imagination such as art, music and …dance. Don’t think it’s possible?

Here’s one example of Google AI generated image taken from Business Insider:

Here’s a couple more from World Economic Form.

Aiva Technologies AI creates music. Here’s one Example:

And a couple more here at Sound Cloud.

Fear of the Unpredictable

As AI’s grow and gain the ability to learn on it’s own I can see that it can be better then humans in every way. This can either improve our lives or be the start of an apocalypse haha...

Robot Services

Facebook is close to building a chat bot with negotiation skills. Facebook researchers recently shutdown AI that invented it’s own language — Digital Journal

As my friend Luis says, until AIs starts asking questions like “Who am I?” or “What is my purpose?” we don’t have much to worry about...until it’s to late!

I think the real concern lies not in what AIs can do but who owns the technology. The power lies in whom ever owns such capabilities.
