This provides an arc of the most magnificent snow clad mountains along the west, north & east of Sikkim as a backdrop, making the tiny state of Sikkim very beautiful.

The Singhelela Range

This range takes off from the great Himalayas Range at Tri-junction of India (Sikkim), and runs in a southerly direction along the Indo Nepal border forming a series of magnificent peaks with such exotic names as Pyramid Peak ( 7123 m), the Twins (7350m), the Kanchenjunga group: comprising the main peak of 8586m, Simvo (6811m), Siniolchu 6888m, Pandim 6691m, Talung 7349m, Kabru 7338m and Janu 7710m.

Thereafter range tapers down to the southern Singhelela range at an elevation of 3500 m. Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world is the most southerly of the Himalayan peaks. It can be approached through Western Sikkim via Yoksom-Dzongri-Gocha La Pass, whilst the Southern Singhelila range is reached through Darjeeling via Tonglu (3063m), Sandakphu (3631m) and Phalut (3596 M).

The Great Himalayan Range

From its juncture with Singhelela Range, the great Himalayan range marks the Tibet, India border running in the North. Easterly direction through the 5710m high Lhonak Peak and the passes of Chorten Nyimala (6544m) and Nakula (5270m). Thereafter, the range cuts across the Northern tip of Sikkim through the exotic peaks of Chomo Yammo (6312m), Khangchen Gayo (6889m) and the lofty Paunhari at 7056 meters.

South of this range lies the lovely high altitude valleys Leaching ( Valley of flowers and glaciers). which is open to visitors. Further north a topographical peculiarity has resulted in a portion of the Tibetan plateau North of Great Himalayas called the Youmtso plains falling within Sikkim.

This area which is in the Northern fringe of Himalayan Range: presents a rare spectacle of brown rolling hills at an average elevation of 5000 meters dominated by the nearly 7000 meter high Himalayan peaks of Kanchenjunga and Paunhari in the lap of which lies the glacial lakes called Gurudongma Chu & Chu Lhamo. Sir JD Hooker in his Himalayan Journal in 1854 writes, “I doubt whether the world contents any scene with more sublime association than this calm sheet of water 17000 ft. above the sea

The Chola Range

The Chola range takes off from the Paunhari Peaks in the southeasterly direction forming the watershed of Teesta River in India and Amo Chu in Tibet (China). This range forms the international boundary between India and Tibet. A number of passes in Chola Range connect Sikkim with the Chumbi Valley in Tibet. The important cases are Tangarla, Chola Nathulal & Jalepla. The ancient trade route passed through the Jalepla -Nathula Passes. These passes are located astride the shortest and easiest land routes between India & Tibet.

The Chola range is approachable through Gangtok & Kalimpong but is partially open to Tourist up to Tsangu Lake.
