Recently I redesigned a Mexican company’s website whose old site had big mistakes of web design such as having colors that don’t have anything to do with the visual identity, confusing navigation and very bad quality images.

So it inspired me to write this article and help business owners understand why their website is so important and why having an out-of-date and forgotten website could be even worst that not having one at all.

1. It’s not mobile-friendly

Considering 60% of internet traffic happens from mobile devices, I can’t stress enough on how important is to have an adaptable site, if your users find difficulties visualizing it, they are just going to go to someone else’s site, who is probably your competition.

There are many web technologies that allow to have a mobile-friendly site and having it is a standard nowadays.

2. It was developed using flash

If your site was developed a few years ago and it hasn’t been updated, it’s very possible that it has plugins and components that are no longer supported by browsers or devices.

For instance, Apple devices do not support Flash, so when a user tries to access the site, an ugly error will appear and they obviously won’t take the time to figure out why, neither try to fix it, they will just go somewhere else.

3. It gives a bad first impression

Most people won’t notice if a website has a great design but what’s sure is that they will know when a site is old and ugly. Many times, giving the right first impression is all you have to win a customer.

4. It doesn’t have Content Management System (CMS)

Things have gotten a lot easier with content management systems such as WordPress and Drupal. You don’t have to be a web designer or developer to update or edit pages. Don’t have the time to do that? You can hire someone else to do those things.

5. Users can’t take action

If you own a restaurant, you should have a reservation form and the menu, if you are a photographer, people should be able to buy the pictures from your site. The goal here is to offer an easy way to buy your products or services online.

6. Your site is nowhere near the top google results

Google crawlers put old content in a lower search ranking, it doesn’t matter how good it is. Posting new information will keep people coming back to your site and thus the possibilities of new sales increase.

SEO good practices such as image alt tags, and correct title tags are important to get good ranking too.

So if you see any of these signs, it’s time you start considering a redesign for your site. Additionally, the site could also have:

  • Blog/News
  • Calls to Action
  • Feedback Form
  • Testimonials
  • Social media integration

At the end of the day it’s important to understand that a redesigned website is an investment and if it’s done correctly, your business will be relevant on the internet and as a fact you will generate more revenue.
