Hinduism reveres Goddess Kali as a significant female deity. She also goes by the name Kalika and is referred to as the “Dark Mother” because of her devastating abilities. The Sanskrit word “Kala,” which means time, is where the term Kali comes from.

Time, Change, Power, Creation, Preservation, and Destruction are all represented by the goddess Kali. Kali also translates to “the black one.”

The Kali Goddess’s narrative

Once upon a time, the Devas and humanity were plagued by two demons named Shumbh and Nishumbh. They were brutal and put the dharma at peril. In order to abduct Goddess Parvati, the asuras travelled to the Himalayas after conquering heaven and earth.

The devas’ side emerged victorious in the ensuing fight between demons and devas. To discipline the asuras, Goddess Parvati assumed the shape of Kali and went to combat. Despite the death of the demons, Kali’s fury did not abate, and she lost control and began murdering humans and devas. Lord Shiva stood in front of the Goddess to protect innocent people from her assault. As soon as Kali placed her foot on Lord Shiva’s chest, she realised her error and changed back into her serene, calm form.

Goddess Kali is pictured keeping her foot on God Shiva as a reminder of this occasion.
