As a woman who’s been in situations that were similar, but not nearly as extreme as this, it’s just not that easy. It’s nice to think that you could just come up and say the right thing in that moment, but a history of abuse like that without support from other people in power (management, for example) makes it damn near impossible to do that in the moment.
You hit a panic response that shuts your rational brain down. Adrenaline floods your system. Your heart starts racing and your palms sweating. You, as not-Amy identified, probably stop forming memories until you cool down.
I can’t tell you the number of times something like that has happened to me and I’ve frozen and then come up with the right things to say… 2 hours too late.
