How many of you have given your credit card numbers over the phone to a merchant, e.g. while ordering food, buying show tickets or even paying your medical bills? Wasn’t that scary?

As a merchant, didn’t you want to securely complete a transaction while the customer was on the phone? How many times have you lost business because customers didn’t want to share their credit card numbers?

We all have had this problem for decades now, but there is still no easy, simple and a secure solution. Over a weekend, Arvind Naidu and I, built VoiceAuth. We were one of the big stage winners in Salesforce Million Dollar Hackathon 2014, recently held in San Francisco.

VoiceAuth can be used to securely authorize a payment over a phone call. First, register your VoiceKey and PIN with VoiceAuth, and a credit card on file. When the customer is on a call transacting with a merchant, the merchant can request for an authorization via VoiceAuth to process the payment. VoiceAuth calls you for your digital approval. Listen to your own VoiceKey and authorize the request by entering your PIN.

Later we realized that what we had built was not just a payment specific solution. It could be used for any authorization system. For example, when someone wants to get an approval from his or her manager, say for an expense request, he or she can use voiceauth to get the authorization for approval in real-time. No logging in into any application. No wait time.

You can also use this technology to authenticate your identity while on a call for eg. with your medical insurance company — without having to give your social security number, date of birth or even your mother’s maiden name to a customer service agent.

The possibilities are endless.
