Athelas is excited to be working with the National Neutropenia Network to bring point-of-care, in-home neutrophil monitoring to the thousands of people with SCN (Severe Chronic Neutropenia) around the country.

Neutropenia is a reduction in a specific type of White Blood Cell known as the “Neutrophil”, which helps the body fight bacterial infections. As such, the condition, even in mild forms, can leave the body exposed to illness-causing foreign microorganisms.

The NNN (National Neutropenia Network) does valuable and critical work in bringing patients of the disease together, designing conferences, and promoting the disease’s research and best practices. We’re looking forward to working with the organization to deploy devices across its patient base.

A patient with an immune condition could wake up in the morning at home, get a blood count within a few moments from a prick of blood — keeping instant tabs on the status of his/her immune health, the impact of certain drugs, concerns regarding a fever, and preemptively take medication or adjust surroundings to minimize infection rates.

To our knowledge it will be one of the first large-scale uses of Artificial Intelligence to improve the management of an entire disease segment in a decentralized manner.
