We hired you because you fly high but…
while you’re here, keep yourself caged
A few weeks ago my boss told me that I was the responsible for the new blog of the company. It was instantly happiness. Why? ‘Cause I love to write and always wanted a blog. So I chose a subject and saw the ideas jump from my head to paper.
Write something for your boss isn't an easy task but I was very satisfied with the result. Yeah… I WAS.
I took enough courage to show my creation to her and knocked at her door. What happened? Well, I know that I’m a little dramatic (ok, VERY dramatic!) but after every modification done by her I saw my happiness falling apart.
At the end of many corrections I couldn't recognize my own text and even worse: end it up with something totally different of my original idea. I don’t believe that I published something that I don’t believe and don’t agree.
Lesson learned:
Everyone is hired for his own potential but it doesn't mean that you can use it freely. You must use it as much as your boss allows and how he thinks you should do it. After all he is the boss, right?
So keep your potential locked. Better yet: expose your potential sometimes but be quickly. Just for your boss to know what he is losing.
