If you don’t watch much independent media, then chances are you know little about Tulsi Gabbard. What you might know is probably in the form of sound bites and highlights from the nationally televised Democratic 2020 primary debates or up against typically passive-aggressive democratic establishment media bobbleheads on CNN and MSNBC, and even The View, who all seem to have some kind of mandate to smear and attack her. If you’re a conservative you may have had more exposure to Tulsi than more lefties as Fox is the only cable news network that consistently offers her more air time. Regardless, you are never going to get a good idea of who Tulsi really is or what she stands for from the mainstream media. For that, you need to tune into independent media. Tulsi is well-represented on a variety of independent video media of various political leanings and tastes. Recommendations and links to full-length video recordings of town halls, speeches, long-form conversations and interviews, and progressive news, opinion, and fan channels are provided below.
The obvious place to start is Tulsi’s official YouTube channel. Check out a couple of full-length stump speeches from the campaign trail. She even has some videos where town halls are held in smaller, intimate places like pubs and voter’s homes and backyards.
I also highly recommend some pre-2020 videos like the following keynote speech at a Muslims for Peace event a couple of years ago. It’s pretty powerful even if you’re not particularly religious. You don’t hear many establishment politicians speaking on this level.
The longer form interviews are good for really understanding Tulsi’s background and her nuanced views.
Tulsi has been featured twice on Joe Rogan’s podcast — the first one is pre-2020 campaign. The second, in the early stages of the 2020 campaign. Both episodes are 1–2 hours long.
I thought the recent October interview with fellow vet, Paul Rieckoff of the Angry Americans podcast was particularly well-done. The two don’t necessarily agree on everything, but the conversation has good energy and flows well.
Here’s Tulsi’s interview with libertarian Dave Rubin in September. This one was considered a little more controversial by a subset of progressives.
And a solid interview with Matt Taibbi and Katie Halper of the Rolling Stone podcast, Useful Idiots.
Finally, an older, stand out from a 2013 conference, Tulsi is interviewed here by Soren Gordamer. This one focuses a lot on Tulsi’s early personal experiences, philosophy, and motivations. A very good discussion.
Here is a list of interviews that are a bit shorter in length by some great progressive independent media journalists. Most are from the earlier days of the 2020 campaign.
Finally, the following is a list of independent and progressive media channels that range from actively advocating for Tulsi regularly to ones that provide regular fair and balanced coverage. Many of these channels also feature regular news and opinion on other Democratic primary 2020 anti-establishment candidates like Bernie Sanders, Andrew Yang, and Marianne Williamson as well as other news and topics. A lot of them are quite entertaining. This list is by no means exhaustive.
