It looks like you’ve just misunderstood what up-front research is and you’ve been too rigid with the amount of time it needs.

Up front research could be done in a day if you fill in the gaps you are looking to fill. This doesn’t make it less useful.

It’s very unlikely you can design something people actually want to use if you haven’t first understood the job they’re trying to complete, how they’re currently trying to complete it and why it’s important to them.
