Trail Running in Minto, New Brunswick
The 20km+ network of Minto trails are located approximately 40 minute drive from Fredericton. The Minto trails meander around a truly unique landscape that was once an open pit coal mine.
To prepare for the trail run, I checked out Trail Forks to see which route(s) would allow me to see everything offered. The suggested route was the ‘Coal Miner’s Lung Race’, a MTB event held annually that attracts many racers from across Atlantic Canada. I could not find a .gpx for the route so I wrote down all the trails used by the race on a piece of paper and hoped the signage was plentiful! Thankfully, it was!
The most difficult decision besides choosing which trails to run was where to park. The network of trails are spread out and if you’re not up for a 20km+ jaunt then you will have to be choosy about where you decide to run. I parked along Northfield Avenue because it was the closest parking lot to Fredericton.
Because I ran on most of the trails (Strava file link), here are my suggestions:
Most fun: Serenity Now Trail has great flow, the ‘best views’ and was well maintained.
Most technical: Scotia Banks: this is one up and down ride! Insanity Later is lumpy too but not as technical.
Something to keep in mind:The trails are designed for mountain biking which means there are lots of burms and tight turns. For those that do not like hills, there are none! Just lots and lots and lots of 5-10 second steep inclines instead!
Most of the trails are in great shape. If you go during the wet seasons, some of the low lying areas collect water which is not a problem when mountain biking (you just ride through it!) but can result in wet shoes/entire legs. So bring a towel!
The Minto trails offer a unique landscape in a non-congested area. Check it out if you’re passing through the area!
