I am one of those liberal white guys from NY near Buffalo. While I have no doubt that there are still racists practicing racism I don’t completely agree with how you use those words, which may be part of the communication problem. For me:

racist = a person who believes that a particular race is superior to another.

racism = prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior:

So for me anyone can be a racist or practice racism. I am more inclined to use the words prejudice ( preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience) or discrimination ( the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex) to describe what you are calling racism. Perhaps I am splitting hairs but I am guessing allot more ‘white” people would buy we have built in prejudices and that institutional racial discrimination still exist than are going to buy that there is wide spread racism.
