The newest team of superheroes has arrived in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Eternals is a superhero film set after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The film follows the Eternals, an immortal group of aliens who have lived on Earth for 7,000 years, as they come together to protect the world from their evil counterparts: the Deviants.
Marvel has had an excellent track record of attracting promising directors and putting them in a superhero movie, with Jon Watts’ work in the Spider-Man and Destin Daniel Cretton films in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Oscar-winning visionary Chloé Zhao once arrived at the MCU, recently won Best Picture and Best Director for Nomadland. Zhao has never done anything with the feel of an MCU movie, and she brings her style to the most successful movie franchise of all time, with lukewarm results.
Almost everything Marvel does can be watched. Even in his smaller films, his films are consistently fun and action-packed, with jokes, easter eggs and visuals that are very pleasing to the eye. Zhao’s approach has some of those qualities, but it also has a lot more. There are moments in this film where the narrative feels quite methodical, as if Zhao wants to spend his time telling a story so vast and epic in scale. Over two and a half hours long, Zhao makes a film that is never boring, but has qualities that keep the film from being as immersive as it could be.
Eternals takes a step beyond the standard Marvel formula, not looking as stereotyped as the other movies. This is a unique risk for Marvel to take in putting an art director’s style on the big screen, and for the most part, it works. It doesn’t look like a disposable, forgettable studio product; it feels like a passionate project for Zhao as she directs the film with grace and maturity, while creating a beautiful film with a lot of ambition. It’s an origin story with never-before-seen ideas, but it’s also a film that features many familiar ideas, almost as if Zhao’s style was faced with the constraints of being a studio film.

Let it be clear that Zhao didn’t have an easy task with this movie. Eternals introduces ten new superheroes to the series, and she had to give each hero a certain amount of development to make the audience care. This is an almost impossible mission to accomplish, and Zhao does his best. Surprisingly, much of this works, as each hero stands out, in part due to the diversity of the cast, featuring different races, genders, sexual orientations and even featuring Makkari, played by Lauren Ridloff, a real-life deaf actress. This is an achievement for diversity in cinema, but each character also has a unique set of powers and, in the final act, the characters are making choices that say a lot about who they are and how different some of them might be.
However, the film has so much construction of worlds and characters that the script stumbles from time to time. The film follows two stories, one that takes place centuries ago and the other that takes place after Endgame. Non-linear narrative has been used in superhero movies such as Batman Begins. The problem is that Eternals has so many characters that juggling each new face with a story told out of order prevents certain character moments from having the emotional depth they deserve.
However, the film has some outstanding performances from its cast that make each character stand out. Sersi (Gemma Chan) and Ikaris (Richard Madden) have an investment relationship that is the heart and soul of the film. Kumail Nanjiani steals the show as Kingo, and his subplot around a documentary filmmaker is the film’s highlight, allowing for a perfectly timed mood.

The film mixes its standard “bring the band back together” storyline with vast visuals and high stakes, resulting in a film that generally works but also feels like it’s biting off more than it can chew. Despite the novelty of a film that tackles such rich themes and doesn’t seem comical at all, the final act of the film still morphs into a bunch of people in funny costumes battling CGI and green screens. Marvel’s formula that seems largely absent from the film infiltrates Zhao’s vision from time to time to create a film that looks like a huge, flawed spectacle.
Many expected a highly acclaimed director like Chloé Zhao to direct a Marvel movie. Unfortunately, this movie isn’t the beautiful marriage of two beloved icons we’d expect. It has its messy moments and compared to the other MCU work this year, this one might be the weakest of them all. However, there is much to appreciate and respect in Zhao’s artistic choices. Each visual, combined with Ramin Djawadi’s chilling soundtrack, creates a superhero movie for the ages that may be low-level MCU, but remain a powerful and entertaining cinema that will polarize audiences. This is an ambitious and exciting film that misses the mark, but remains on par with what we’ve seen in a successful movie franchise.
There is a general rule among comic book fans when it comes to the ethos differences between Marvel and DC. Marvel tends to be (comparatively) more grounded and focused on ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances that show their inner hero, while DC is grander and highlights characters who purport to be role models for humanity. The failure to relate to vs. the ideal to aspire to.
Not that any one company has a monopoly on either approach, but as an overview, it can help explain how each company approaches the superhero idea. It might also help explain why Eternals, the latest MCU release, looks so different from almost every other Marvel movie or TV show.
The film itself seems to be aware of the differences it’s morphing from, openly comparing one of its main characters to one of DC’s biggest names (and for the more geek-inclined, there are other analogues to be found among the main cast. ). But rather than feeling like Marvel is trying to pull it off the competitor’s plate, it makes sense as to how the original Eternals came about, with writer/artist Jack Kirby using many of the same building blocks that were used in his New Gods — starring in the Fourth World epic.
It helps that Chloé Zhao et al. they are able to match Kirby’s type of cosmic-scale myth-building, and they are able to humanize and temporize the ethereal like Neil Gaiman’s works, including his own run in Eternais. There is also the same multicultural approach to real-world mythology as in Gaiman’s work, using Greek, Norse, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian pantheons to support his own vision of the superhero as divine.
While audiences follow the eccentric incumbent family of superpowered beings (whose onscreen chemistry certainly sells that they’ve known each other for millennia), the story shows the Eternals and the Deviants as part of a mythical cycle of destruction and creation; interstellar gears in a much larger machination. The way he delves into the notion of the superhero as humanity’s shepherd, as the driving force behind their evolution, occasionally reaches levels of Marvelman poignancy in its questioning of just how far they should take on their role. And if it’s worth helping humanity to persevere in the first place…
In terms of using comic books as modern mythology, it may lack the euphoria of Zack Snyder’s epic Watchmen or Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Old Guard (even if the weird representation here is on a par with the latter), but for the type of superhero storytelling that’s being attempted, works very well and shows enough emotional strength to support the ambitious scope of the production. Endgame looks mundane compared to what’s tried here.
To put it more simply, if any of the above sounds like the pretentious ramblings of an olfactory excretion junkie, chances are this movie doesn’t do much for you (ditto for those who are already bored with superhero stories) . But for those who appreciate these stories as more than just power fantasies, Eternals serves as an unusually grand and moving vision of superheroes.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe can often be accused of emitting a repetitive sensation. Those who don’t like the MCU claim that the movies do the same things over and over again. Even someone like yours, who likes movies almost exclusively, sees some of your screenplays. Marvel has a formula, which they really don’t waver from. Now, with the Eternals, they’ve given Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao the greatest freedom of anyone so far playing in her sandbox. For a while, speculation ran as Zhao had used that cache to make a movie unlike anything we’ve seen from the entertainment giant before. Well, that’s true, but not necessarily in the way we expected. More than a week after seeing Eternals, I still can’t figure out whether I liked it or not.
The eternals frustrate because parts of him are remarkable. The visuals are unmatched for a comic book movie. Furthermore, these superheroes are allowed to meditate in a unique way. Also, the concept of these heroes and their dogmas/powers viewed through a religious lens is quite new. On the other hand, however, it lacks the real action, the villain is bad even by Marvel standards, and long stretches don’t allow anything interesting to happen. This is the rare case where you can see the storyteller’s independent sensibilities compared to the studio’s instincts, but on their side.
This is the saga of the Eternals, a group of ancient immortal beings. The race of alien gods, for lack of a better term, is a creation of the Celestials, designed to protect the universe. A group of ten Eternals were sent to Earth over 7,000 years ago as a means of protection against the evil Deviants. Led by Ajak (Salma Hayek), the group spent centuries defeating their villainous counterparts, before being left on their own on the planet once the threat was extinguished. Some withdrew from humanity after the separation, like Ikaris (Richard Madden), while others, like Sersi (Gemma Chan) and Sprite (Lia McHugh), live among them. In fact, Sersi has a long-term relationship with a human in Dane Whitman (Kit Harrington). When a Deviant of a new type appears, they know they need to get the band back together.
