Tumblr Mashr Experiment

Creating generative patterns and textures using real-time images from Tumblr.


Everything is Remix, we already know that. But the web-platform can take this concept further by utilising the power of user-generated content. Tumblr is one of the biggest sharing platforms specially amongst visual artists. The most popular Tumblr tag is #GIF. With Tumblr API, it is possible to access this massive library and with HTML5 we can manipulate the contents of that library to create interesting visual textures and patterns.

This experiment (Tumblr Mashr) uses Tumblr API to get ten recent posts with a given tag (e.g. gif) or multiple tags (e.g. glitch+gif). Then, five of these images are randomly selected and displayed on top of each other using randomly generated CSS styling such as Opacity and Hue-Rotate.

This results in endless visual possibilities that are created based on Tumblr’s user-generated content and some simple CSS randomisation.
