10 Low Light Houseplants that Flower

It is no wonder that landscapes, greenery, moving clouds, colours of flowers, plants, or changing sky excite the human psyche. They work as visual stimuli. People who are draped in concrete lack the chance to satisfy their eyes every day with the colours of nature. Then, why not borrow some from nature’s store?

Low light doesn’t mean no light. There are some easy-to-care plants that will thrive in shades to poorly lit places. Some of them will even adjust immensely to your busy schedule. Humble, right!

Here are 10 low-light flowering houseplants to add colours and serenity:

1. Flaming Katies (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana).

Mostly enjoyed as an interior plant, Flaming Katies can be grown in nearly every zone. The bright bloom with shiny green and unique leaves awakens the darkest shades or corners. They come in bright colors like red, orange, pink, and yellow.

As grouped in hardy succulents, they are very easy to grow. They will bloom year after year if provided with the right conditions. Flaming Katies can grow without direct sunlight. Even a bright room will do just fine for months.

2. Phalaenopsis (Butterfly Orchids).

Phalaenopsis, the world’s favourite orchid, is very easy to take care of and inexpensive enough that it became “the orchid that anyone can grow”. This beauty adds a subtle delicacy on the office desks or coffee tables. They offer at least 60 different species with different colours and sizes.

This beginner-friendly plant needs indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight will scorch the plant. Even if it stops blooming, don’t throw it away. Keep taking care of it, soon it will bloom again!

3. Guzmania Bromeliads.

These excellent epiphyte succulents make amazing houseplants. There are nearly 120 kinds of species that come in Guzmania plants. They bloom in orange, yellow, red, pink, or even dark purple with thin dark green leaves emerging at the base.

Since they like a little more humidity, watering frequently would be good. These plants cannot tolerate direct sunlight. Putting them in a brighter room would do just fine.

Once they stop blooming, the mother plant will die leaving behind some baby plants called ‘pups’. Later on, they will grow into fine new ones and bloom again.

4. Oxalis triangularis.

Oxalis triangularis, also known as False Shamrock, is a houseplant with deep purple trifoliate leaves and gives a light pink-purple bloom. They add up a uniqueness with their butterfly wings-shaped leaves to our home and offices.

These Oxalis species respond to light levels. The leaflets get folded due to the closing of light (at night) or under stress. It thrives well in bright indirect sunlight and goes dormant untimely if temperatures exceed 27 °C. It should be watered only when the surface looks dry. It needs no water when the winter comes.

And surprisingly, the leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. These leaves and flowers are often used as a decoration for salads.

5. Anthurium.

Anthurium brightens up any room with its eye-catching beautiful shape and attractive colour. They are rarely found in colours like pink, purple, orange, and sometimes almost black.

These flowering houseplants like all levels of low light. In lower light, they will grow slow and bloom less. But the direct sun will hit it hard. Each bloom can stay up to three months. Likable temperature is between 16–22 °C.

This plant grows rich in high organic matter and moist soils. A totem will be useful for the climbings of Anthuriums. Overwatering can cause root rot. Make sure to touch the soil before watering. If it feels dry, water it only then.

6. Schlumbergera (Holiday Cactus).

Holiday cactus, also known as Easter cactus or even Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus, make awesome houseplants. They are mostly found in colours like red, orange, yellow, pink, and white.

These fabulous babies are very easy to take care of and they last for generations with the right care. But, they are often found in very bad shape as some people tend to forget about them!

These plants cannot stand direct sun exposure like most cacti but do great in a bright room. They like a little humid environment. So, a bright bathroom or kitchen will keep them in great condition. Even a mist spray will also do the job. After that, all it requires, is a well-draining soil and a fixed place to sit in.

7. Amaryllis.

You cannot possibly overlook the presence of the Amaryllis in a room. They will strike you with their richness of colour and funnel-like shape. They usually come in white with crimson veins, though pink or purple may also be found.

This spectacular plant flowers annually, and goes dormant till summer. They are long known for their ease of care and force budding. They can be grown in direct sunlight to full shade. In fact, after you see buds coming relocate them from direct sun to a bright room to elongate the blooms for a longer period.

As for the watering part, ¼ cup is all for a week. And water it only when it feels dry to the touch. Once the bloom is over, leave it to dry out. After that, cut the leaves and store the bulb in a dark and dry area for the next year.

8. Brazilian Fireworks.

This elegant flowering plant attracts the eyes with its bright blooms throughout the year. Yes! they will bloom again and again, from spring to winter. They bloom in red and purple colours, with dichromatic leaves of dark green and white.

They thrive very well even in shady places. You can enjoy their bloom for years with only a little care. They don’t require much of your time.

9. Wax Plant (Hoya carnosa).

Wax Plant, also known as porcelain flower or Hoya carnosa makes amazing indoor plants. They are native to the region of southern India. They will produce a cluster of white flowers and shiny green leaves to brighten up your space. That aside, they even produce a beautiful fragrance.

Long known for their ease of care, they are passed down from generation to generation with only a little knowledge about how to take care of them. They like the bright indirect sun. Direct sun exposure can burn the leaves. Being tropical plants, they need the atmosphere a little more humid.

10. Peace Lily.

Peace Lilies are excellent choices for homes and offices. These decent babies will not just brighten up your surroundings but are also great at cleaning the air. Their contrasting shades of dark green leaves and white “flowers” make a sense of tranquility in the appearance. The “flowers” are actually leaf bracts covering the flowers.

Peace lilies will not mind medium to low light. If you want them to be more flowery, then put them in more light. Low light will bring fewer flowers.

These plants are drought tolerant. They will tell you when to water by drooping their leaves. Yet, try to water them before they start drooping. Even if that happens, don’t get too fussy about it, a little drink of water will revive the plant.
