Well… It’s controversial. Also, Will Arnett implied it was Canada on television.

Andrew Jackson and a mixed U.S force including southern volunteers and native Americans route a numerically superior British Army at New Orleans.

Some claim it was a stalemate. Some claim it was an American victory. While others like Will Arnett think Canada won the war of 1812. So who won? Was it a stalemate? No?

Introduction to the War of 1812

In 1809, the British were blockading Napoleonic France and were seizing American merchants at sea before forcing them into military service. Both those activities had an extremely negative effect on the American economy. At the same time, a confederation of native Americans was breaking away from America, in America’s Northwest Territory. This native confederacy was comprised of the Shawnee, Huron, Lenape, Sauk and many other tribes. The war between America and this confederacy started in 1811 which is when the natives allied themselves with the British. America saw that the British Empire was hurting its economy and deliberately arming its native American enemies that were raiding and taking land back from America. So, in June of 1812, congress declared war on Great Britain and the war began. On one side was the Americans and on the other side, was Tecumseh's Confederacy and the British Empire. This war would not be over by 1812. No, only in 1815 would the fighting stop.
