Adventures of Converting *Nix computer back to Windows.

I know that this isn't a post on website design, but it’s still in the area of technology and the future of our wonderful industry. Working on computers just goes hand-in-hand with making websites so I’m going to share with you an unlikely adventure into a little bit of what I.T. career can pertain.

I believe that there are upsides to converting a *nix operating system (*nix refers to Unix and Linux distributions) to a Windows operating system, as well as there are downsides. With as many walls that I hit along the way, Good grief. Finally, it’s been done, changing *nix to windows 7. In this post I will not mention the distribution of *nix because I don’t want to show favoritism or make it look like I’m putting down any particular distribution.

Some of the complications that came up were, formatting the hard drive through command prompt to the proper file-system, rebuilding the Boot Configuration Data (BCD), fixing the Master Boot Record (MBR), assigning the drive letter(e.g C:\ and D:\) and booting up the install disk all in the command prompt. This had to be done many times repeatedly, because of bad sectors in the hard drive and faulty disks.

Because of this torturous night staying up, I now understand how to convert *nix operating systems to windows operating systems much better, and if I were asked to do it again, I would be better prepared and slightly more calm about it.
