Loose thoughts on shedding old habits

  • It’s human to wrap ourselves in our selves.
  • We want the comfort of a predictable, consistent identity. We may even need that predictability. It is important for us to be able to say ‘I’m not really a hugger’ or ‘I think Amala is an atrocity’ and mean it today and next year.
  • Sometimes, we grow bigger than our comforting cocoons. It then becomes more important to shed the skins we’ve become so comfortable in, than it is to find comfort in burrowing even deeper. That hug you’re convinced you don’t need just might be what you’ve been missing all this time.
  • Refusing to get out of the warmth feels…good. After all, it’s cold outside. There’s nothing but suffering outside. Why should I want to try the ugly, unfamiliar food when I can just get jollof rice? Do you not know that jollof rice has won international awards?
  • You could step into the cold, throw off your blankets, shed old skins and still not be the person you want to be. The key to becoming a new person is to choose to shed everytime your newly revealed self gets old.
  • I like to believe that after many many painful, cold, and sometimes lonely periods, you come closer and closer to the identity that best serves you, whether or not you thought you’d enjoy being that person.
  • You may remain unsatisfied with the person you turned out to be after all the time and all the effort.
  • What is most important is to figure out when to snuggle up – when it feels right, when you need to. And when you’re strong again, throw off the covers and walk into the cold.
